by Carolyn Resnick
In studying wild horses, the author discovered “a universal language that exists among horses….” She uses this wordless language to achieve a “magnetic bond” with each horse she trains.
Resnick provides insight into how readers can achieve the same bond with their horses – a bond that results in mutual respect and understanding, forming a better relationship between horses and their handlers.
Carolyn Resnick’s career has spanned over 40 years as a horse trainer, Arabian breeder, training clinician and student of wild horse behavior. Here, she explains how her training methods developed as a result of observing and interacting with a wide variety of both wild and domestic horses throughout her life.
The author says that this book was written to explain “how I developed my ability with horses, my understanding of herd society and how dominant horses can be led from their natural instinct to follow a leader….” It also reveals the basis of the training techniques she uses to create happy horses who are outstanding performers and willing partners.
Unlike most trainers, Resnick first trains from the ground without tack or other restraints (or round pens), encouraging the horse to participate as a willing partner. When the horse later advances in training, the bond formed during this early training continues to benefit both horse and rider.
This is the unique memoir of a gifted and intelligent horse trainer who not only understands horses but shares a special bond with them. The author’s poetic style of writing and her philosophy of maintaining a respectful, symbiotic relationship with all other creatures - as exemplified by her relationship with horses - should appeal to a variety of readers.
